This is a representation of Paris, seen from the river Seine. The two towers of Notre Dame may be seen to the right, as well as the spire of the Sainte Chapelle. The large building to the left is the Louvre, still with a medieval tower, the Tour de Bois, dating from the fourteenth century. The wooden bridge in front of the Pont Neuf is the Pont-Rouge, also called Pont Sainte-Anne in the honour of Anne of Austria, and Pont-Barbier, which was washed downstream by flooding in 1684. The painting appears to be unfinished, especially in the bridges and background areas. The Pont-Rouge was built in 1632 by a Treasury controller called Barbier, in replacement of a ferry that was used since 1550. It was situated opposite the rue de Beaune, near where the Pont-Royal is today, and linked the Saint-Germain quarter to the Tuileries.
