When Stephen Elmer died in 1796 he left his painting equipment and paintings to his nephew William, who was also a painter. William is the subject of this painting and is standing, his body turned slightly to the left, but facing forwards. His left hand is resting on his hips. He has something which looks like a red cloak draped over his right arm. He is wearing a blue velvet jacket with silver buttons, and a high-collared white shirt. His dark hair is worn loose and slightly curled just to his shoulder.

Elmer does not appear to have painted many portraits but this one clearly shows he did not lack talent in this area.
