This portrait is of William Hutton, who was a leading geologist of his day and a Fellow of the Geological Society. In 1832 he published, together with Professor John Lindley, "The Fossil Flora of Great Britain; or Figures and Descriptions of the Vegetable Remains Found in a Fossil State in This Country, vol.2 no. IX", which a contemporary review described as "an important contribution to the science of British, and, indeed, of universal geology.” Born in Sunderland, he was settled in Newcastle by the age of 30. He gained an early reputation as a practical geologist, particularly an authority on the coal measures, and an enthusiastic fossil collector. After moving to Malta, he returned to Newcastle in 1857, and then moved to West Hartlepool, where he died in November 1860. Hutton's valuable collection of fossils is held by the Natural History Society in Newcastle and the College of Physical Science at Durham University.
Shotton is the artist best represented in the Collection, with 18 paintings forming the 'Shotton Bequest'. He was associated with the Cullercoats Artists' Colony.
