Born in Westmorland, the sitter entered Queen's in 1670. He became a Fellow in 1678 and DD in 1692. He was Vicar of Oakley and of St Martin-in-the-Fields in 1692 and Archdeacon of Middlesex in 1705. The sitter was elected Provost, 1704–1717, and Vice-Chancellor, 1705–1709. He was instrumental in demolishing the old buildings and starting the construction of the new front quad.

Upper Right: 'William Lancaster D.D. Archdeacon of Middlesex and Provost of Queen's College Oxford. Vice Chancellor of the University of the ancient family of Sockbridge Hall and Howgill Lineal descendant of John of Gaunt Duke of Lancaster he was rector of St Martin of the Fields. He restored Queen's Coll. and endowed it. He died Feb IV MDCCXVI.'
