A winter landscape, with a broad frozen river to the right, and a walled town stretching from the left midground into the distance to the right. In the foreground, left, is a tall wooden house, partially obscured by a single leaning tree. Smoke rises from the chimney, and a figure climbs the stairs at the front of building towards another figure in the doorway. Scattered groups of people are gathered on the ice, including in the foreground, centre, a group in a sledge pulled by a white horse. A man lies sprawled on the ice in front of the horse, his hat knocked from his head. Behind him and to his right, others figures are being pushed in smaller sledges. On the far right a young boy with a basket on his head, stands next to a group of men. To his right, two figures sit on the ice while a man bends down to pick up a large basket.
