Renowned for her photographic portraits, Anne-Katrin Purkiss captures the connection between her subjects and their environment. Born in Chemnitz, Germany, Purkiss graduated from Leipzig University in 1983 with a degree in journalism and photography. She moved to England in 1984 and began working as a freelance photographer in 1988.
She has been photographing artists and sculptors in their working environments since the 1990s, working primarily in black and white and utilising natural light. Her subjects have included Elisabeth Frink, Kenneth Armitage and Andy Goldsworthy. Purkiss’ photographs have been exhibited widely and published in a range of newspapers and journals around the world. Her works are held in public collections including the National Portrait Gallery, Royal Academy of Art, Tate and Henry Moore Institute.
