More about

The birthplace of George Stephenson (1781–1848), the pioneering civil and mechanical engineer, is a former mining cottage built around 1760 in the Northumberland village of Wylam. It is one of the Trust’s smallest properties, given in 1949 by the North East Coast Institution of Engineering & Shipbuilders. It has just one display room, in which there is a 1881 commemorative painting of the property by John Wallace.
