The Corn Exchange was built in 1862 and was designed by Thomas Nicholson. From the day The Corn Exchange opened the first floor was always associated with entertainment. Regular events like cabaret, bands, poetry readings, opera, plays and roller-skating, which was all the fashion in the town at that point, were held there.
The hall was granted a license to be a cinema in 1922 and took the name 'The New Theatre'. It kept this name until its destruction in a fire in 1939. After being rebuilt the building was eventually bought by the Town Council and today the first floor houses the Council Chamber and offices.
