William Perring Hollyer was born in Dover. His father, Joseph, was a Herald Painter by trade, which is perhaps where William got his artistic skills from, and many of Joseph's other sons became artists on glass. William specialised in animal paintings, particularly Scottish Highland scenes which were very popular in the mid-nineteenth century. This can also be seen in 'A Glint of Sunshine', another of his works in the Collection.

In 1851 he moved with his parents from Dover to London, marrying in 1864. He fathered 10 children, many of whom became artists. He lived at various times on Merseyside and in Huntingdonshire, and was residing in Berkshire at the time of his death.
