This solid light bay cob may have belonged to John Theobald, who bred and raced horses for over 30 years in the early 19th century. This is one of several paintings at Brodsworth Hall which reflect Theobald’s passion for the turf. It is signed by Barenger and dated indistinctly 1812, or 1816, when Theobald was just entering the racing world. He gradually built up a major commercial stud at Stockwell, Middlesex, and had his greatest successes in racing in the 1830s and 1840s. The sporting artist James Barenger painted the mares and foals of the Theobald Stud in 1825. This painting of a cob and two other paintings of horses at Brodsworth have also been attributed to Barenger as they have the same gilt frame with shells in the corners as one signed by Barenger.
