This painting has been attributed to Barenger because it has an identical gilt frame with shell mouldings as a painting of a stallion at Brodsworth which is signed and dated by Barenger.
It is one of several paintings at Brodsworth Hall which reflect John Theobald’s passion for the turf. He gradually built up a major commercial stud at Stockwell, Middlesex, and had his greatest successes in racing in the 1830s and 1840s. A group of mares and foals of the Theobald Stud were also painted by Barenger.
