This is one of several paintings at Brodsworth Hall which reflect Theobald’s passion for the turf. He gradually built up a major commercial stud at Stockwell, Middlesex, and had his greatest successes in racing in the 1830s and 1840s.
The painting is signed by the sporting artist, James Barenger, who also painted the mares and foals of the Theobald Stud in 1825. There are also four other paintings of horses, as well as a still life of a duck by him at Brodsworth Hall. The painting has suffered damage in the past.
