A portrait of this type, stated to be after J. Cawse from a lithograph by R. J. Lane is reproduced in H. S. Wyndham 'Annals of Covent Garden', 11 (1906), p.32. Carl Maria Frederick Ernst von Weber (1786–1826) was a German composer known as Carl Maria von Weber. Other portraits of him include a drawing by Lane from life (1826), the lithographs by Lane paid for by Mr Hawes with background by G. Childs (National Portrait Gallery), and engravings by Carl Mayer and Jugel after unknown artists. There is also a drawing of him, made shortly before his death, in the Royal Society of Musicians. It is possible that this and the portrait of Sir George Thomas Smart both came from the Smart family. Sir George Smart, when director of the Covent Garden Opera, commissioned 'Oberon' from Weber, who died in his house.
