Sir George Thomas Smart (1776–1867) was a conductor and editor (particulary of Handel). There are portraits of him in the National Portrait Gallery by Bradley (1830), and at the Royal Society of Musicians. A portrait of this pattern was engraved by E. Stalke, and one was exhibited by the Royal Academy in 1830. It is possible that this and the portrait of Carl Maria Frederick Ernst von Weber both came from the Smart family. Sir George Smart, when director of the Covent Garden Opera, commissioned 'Oberon' from Weber, who died in his house. Miss Smart lent a portrait of Weber by Cawse to the exhibition of portraits of musicians held at the Albert Hall in 1865.
