Dame Annie Maud Burnett was elected to Tynemouth Council in 1910; she was the first woman to hold that position not only in Tynemouth but the north of England. She was made a Dame in 1918 for her services during the First World War as President of the Tynemouth War Savings Association. She later became the first female Mayor of Tynemouth, serving two terms in 1928–1930. There is a Blue Plaque on her house in Priors Terrace, Tynemouth, where she lived all her life. The artist was a landscape, marine, portrait and genre painter in oil and watercolour. Born in Newcastle, he was a self-taught artist. He exhibited at the Berwick Club and the Laing Art Gallery, both in Newcastle, and also at the Royal Academy. He was associated with the Cullercoats Artists' Colony.
