In the background is St Mary's Island, Whitley Bay, at some time before St Mary's Lighthouse was built in 1897. It is likely that this is an actual rather than an imagined shipwreck, but the boat involved and the year it happened are not known. Bernard Benedict Hemy was born in Australia, where his family had emigrated in 1852, and was the youngest brother of noted British marine painters Charles Napier Hemy and Thomas Marie Madawaska Hemy. Unlike his brothers, he was not widely travelled, preferring the quieter life of the north east coast of England. He is known to have lived at one time in Penman Street, North Shields. Throughout his career he displayed a strong competence at creating realistic portrayals of every day marine activity, documenting coastal and harbour views as well as local fishing scenes of the period.
