Painter, printmaker and teacher, Herbert was born in London. Leaving school at an early age, he worked for a short while in newspapers before attending life-drawing classes part-time at St Martin's School of Art under R. V. Pitchforth. In 1951 he married the sculptor Jacqueline Henly and began exhibiting at the Royal Academy. Mainly interested in figuration, his paintings are nonetheless not straightforwardly realistic. As a Catholic convert with a long-term fascination with Buddhism, a British Council financed trip to the Far East helped to hone these religious interests. His later and best-known work is preoccupied with the depiction of Biblical subjects in a quasi-primitive style. 'The Marvellous House' appears at first glance to be a simple, direct composition.
