This rustic scene, painted with much impasto and strong contrasts of light and colour, is typical of Yeats's atmospheric landscapes. The brushstrokes, as often in his later works, are clearly visible and give the painting a structure mainly independent of the subject itself. The unspectacular theme of an open gate may be in Dublin, his preferred setting.
