In August 1899 a Grand Fête was held at Carisbrooke Castle to fund the restoration of the exterior of St Thomas’ Church, Newport. The entertainment included a 'gipsy encampment', dances, concerts and a 'bicycle gymkhana'.

In this painting, Queen Victoria sits in a carriage outside the Governor’s House with her grandchildren Princess Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein and Prince Leopold of Battenberg. Her daughter, Princess Beatrice, stands beside them dressed in black.
