The Westgate has been used since 1898 as a museum but before that it was a document store, pub entertainment room, prison and defensive gateway. The Museum helps illustrate the Tudor and Stuart periods of Winchester's history along with the history of the medieval gateway. Included amongst the objects on display are two paintings from the city's collection. One is a portrait of Ralph Lamb a former mayor of London who re-founded Winchester's St John's charity and attended the wedding of Philip of Spain and Queen Mary in 1554. The second painting is of the Westgate and its immediate surroundings in the 18th century, which shows just how undeveloped the city was at that time.
